A vulnerability was found in cPanel 11.38.2/11.40.1/11.42.0 (Hosting Control Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file editit.html. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was shared 02/05/2014 by Shubham Mittal as TSR 2014-0001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cpanel.net. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:editit.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 11.38.2.16, 11.40.1.10 or 11.42.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
