CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This affects the function xenvif_set_hash_mapping of the file drivers/net/xen-netback/hash.c of the component Linux Netback Driver. Executing a manipulation as part of Request can lead to integer overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2018-15471. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Xen up to 4.18.1 (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function xenvif_set_hash_mapping of the file drivers/net/xen-netback/hash.c of the component Linux Netback Driver. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in xenvif_set_hash_mapping in drivers/net/xen-netback/hash.c in the Linux kernel through 4.18.1, as used in Xen through 4.11.x and other products. The Linux netback driver allows frontends to control mapping of requests to request queues. When processing a request to set or change this mapping, some input validation (e.g., for an integer overflow) was missing or flawed, leading to OOB access in hash handling. A malicious or buggy frontend may cause the (usually privileged) backend to make out of bounds memory accesses, potentially resulting in one or more of privilege escalation, Denial of Service (DoS), or information leaks.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was published 08/17/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-15471 since 08/17/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 112099 (Fedora 27 : kernel / kernel-headers (2018-79d7c3d2df)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197305 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-aws, Linux-azure, Linux-gcp, Linux-kvm, Linux-oem, Linux-raspi2 Vulnerabilities (USN-3820-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (112099), SecurityFocus (BID 105550†) and OSVDB (11454†). Similar entry is available at VDB-124953. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
