libvirt up to 2.1 QEMU Command Line information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in libvirt up to 2.1 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component QEMU Command Line. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

libvirt before 2.2 includes Ceph credentials on the qemu command line when using RADOS Block Device (aka RBD), which allows local users to obtain sensitive information via a process listing.

The bug was discovered 11/03/2016. The weakness was presented 08/20/2018 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5160 since 07/01/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94700 (Oracle Linux 7 : libvirt (ELSA-2016-2577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157323 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for libvirt (ELSA-2016-2577)).

Upgrading to version 2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (94700). See VDB-82056 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
