Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM Java Runtime Environment 6.0/7.0/8.0 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Dump File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The IBM Java Runtime Environment's Diagnostic Tooling Framework for Java (DTFJ) (IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition 6.0 , 7.0, and 8.0) does not protect against path traversal attacks when extracting compressed dump files. IBM X-Force ID: 144882.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2018. The weakness was shared 08/20/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-1656 since 12/12/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 112178 (RHEL 6 : java-1.8.0-ibm (RHSA-2018:2575)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371180 (IBM Java SDK Multiple Vulnerabilities (Oracle July 17 2018 CPU (1.6.0_201, 1.7.0_191, 1.8.0_181))).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
