A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Lync 2010 (Unified Communication Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Search Handler. Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Lync 2010, 2010 Attendee, and 2010 Attendant allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .ocsmeet file, aka "Lync Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 06/12/2012 by Hamburgers Maccoy as MS12-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1849 since 03/22/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59457 (MS12-039: Vulnerabilities in Lync Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2707956)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90811 (Microsoft Lync Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-039)).
Applying the patch MS12-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12329.
