A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.5.8 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function imagecrop of the file ext/gd/gd.c of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Integer overflow in the gdImageCrop function in ext/gd/gd.c in PHP 5.5.x before 5.5.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via an imagecrop function call with a large x dimension value, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2014 by Kuba Brecka as #66356 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.php.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-7226 since 12/28/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at bugs.php.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 47 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72511 (PHP 5.5.x < 5.5.9 GD Extension Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195434 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Php5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2126-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.5.9 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at php.net.
