A vulnerability was found in Responsive Filemanager up to 9.13.3. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file /filemanager/ajax_calls.php of the component Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. /filemanager/ajax_calls.php in tecrail Responsive FileManager before 9.13.4 does not properly validate file paths in archives, allowing for the extraction of crafted archives to overwrite arbitrary files via an extract action, aka Directory Traversal.
The bug was discovered 08/20/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-15536 since 08/19/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:filemanager/ajax_calls.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 9.13.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
