Details
A vulnerability was found in xkbcommon up to 0.8.1 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ExprResolveLhs of the file xkbcomp/expr.c of the component Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unchecked NULL pointer usage in ExprResolveLhs in xkbcomp/expr.c in xkbcommon before 0.8.2 could be used by local attackers to crash (NULL pointer dereference) the xkbcommon parser by supplying a crafted keymap file that triggers an xkb_intern_atom failure.
The bug was discovered 08/05/2018. The weakness was released 08/25/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com.
