Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.6 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file drivers/usb/misc/yurex.c of the component yurex USB Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in yurex_read in drivers/usb/misc/yurex.c in the Linux kernel before 4.17.7. Local attackers could use user access read/writes with incorrect bounds checking in the yurex USB driver to crash the kernel or potentially escalate privileges.
The bug was discovered 07/06/2018. The weakness was released 08/31/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-16276 since 08/31/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 56 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117862 (Debian DSA-4308-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171601 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:2879-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.17.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
