A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSC up to 0.18.x. Affected is the function sc_pkcs15emu_esteid_init of the file libopensc/pkcs15-esteid.c of the component esteid Card Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. A single byte buffer overflow when handling responses from an esteid Card in sc_pkcs15emu_esteid_init in libopensc/pkcs15-esteid.c in OpenSC before 0.19.0-rc1 could be used by attackers able to supply crafted smartcards to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was released 09/04/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-16422 since 09/03/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
