Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected is the function connect of the component vm Guest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Kernel Memory). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in the Linux Kernel where an attacker may be able to have an uncontrolled read to kernel-memory from within a vm guest. A race condition between connect() and close() function may allow an attacker using the AF_VSOCK protocol to gather a 4 byte information leak or possibly intercept or corrupt AF_VSOCK messages destined to other clients.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was shared 09/10/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-14625 since 07/27/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 120301 (Fedora 29 : kernel / kernel-headers (2018-2645eb8dab)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351482 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS2-2019-1145).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (120301) and SecurityFocus (BID 106253†). The entries VDB-113072, VDB-128011, VDB-128084 and VDB-130915 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
