The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was shared 09/11/2018 with Check Point as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared for download at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-8430 since 03/14/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word if a user opens a specially crafted PDF file. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could cause arbitrary code to execute in the context of the current user.
