Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenAFS up to 1.6.22/1.8.1 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component RPC Handler. The manipulation as part of a Length Field leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in OpenAFS before 1.6.23 and 1.8.x before 1.8.2. Several data types used as RPC input variables were implemented as unbounded array types, limited only by the inherent 32-bit length field to 4 GB. An unauthenticated attacker could send, or claim to send, large input values and consume server resources waiting for those inputs, denying service to other valid connections.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was published 09/12/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at openafs.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16949 since 09/11/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117640 (Debian DLA-1513-1 : openafs security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176485 (Debian Security Update for openafs (DSA 4302-1)).
