A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.9 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function TIFFmemcmp of the file tif_unix.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A NULL pointer dereference in the function _TIFFmemcmp at tif_unix.c (called from TIFFWriteDirectoryTagTransferfunction) in LibTIFF 4.0.9 allows an attacker to cause a denial-of-service through a crafted tiff file. This vulnerability can be triggered by the executable tiffcp.
The bug was discovered 09/13/2018. The weakness was presented 09/13/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-17000 since 09/13/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
