A vulnerability classified as critical was found in CUPS 1.7.0/1.7.1 (Printing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function cupsUser of the file systemv/llpasswd.c of the component lppasswd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
lppasswd in CUPS before 1.7.1, when running with setuid privileges, allows local users to read portions of arbitrary files via a modified HOME environment variable and a symlink attack involving .cups/client.conf.
The weakness was presented 01/10/2014 by Jann Horn as STR #4319 as confirmed bug report (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cups.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6891 since 11/28/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71977 (CUPS 1.6.x >= 1.6.4 / 1.7.x < 1.7.1 lppasswd Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195813 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Cups Vulnerability (USN-2082-1)).
Applying the patch str4319.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cups.org.
