A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Moodle up to 3.1.13/3.3.7/3.4.4/3.5.1 (Learning Management Software). moodle before versions 3.5.2, 3.4.5, 3.3.8, 3.1.14 is vulnerable to an XML import of ddwtos could lead to intentional remote code execution. When importing legacy 'drag and drop into text' (ddwtos) type quiz questions, it was possible to inject and execute PHP code from within the imported questions, either intentionally or by importing questions from an untrusted source.
The bug was discovered 09/18/2018. The weakness was presented 09/17/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-14630 since 07/27/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. Upgrading to version 3.1.14, 3.3.8, 3.4.5 or 3.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
