CryptoSaga random Smart Contract RNG weak prng

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in CryptoSaga. Impacted is the function random. Executing a manipulation as part of Smart Contract can lead to weak prng (RNG). This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-12975. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in CryptoSaga (affected version unknown). This vulnerability affects the function random. The manipulation as part of a Smart Contract leads to a weak prng vulnerability (RNG). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-338. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) in a security context, but the PRNG's algorithm is not cryptographically strong. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The random() function of the smart contract implementation for CryptoSaga, an Ethereum game, generates a random value with publicly readable variables such as timestamp, the current block's blockhash, and a private variable (which can be read with a getStorageAt call). Therefore, attackers can precompute the random number and manipulate the game (e.g., get powerful characters or get critical damages).

The bug was discovered 07/31/2018. The weakness was released 09/24/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at medium.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-12975 since 06/28/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 55 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
