Python up to 3.8 Elementtree C Accelerator XML Document Collision resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Python up to 3.8 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Elementtree C Accelerator. The manipulation as part of a XML Document leads to a resource management vulnerability (Collision). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Python's elementtree C accelerator failed to initialise Expat's hash salt during initialization. This could make it easy to conduct denial of service attacks against Expat by contructing an XML document that would cause pathological hash collisions in Expat's internal data structures, consuming large amounts CPU and RAM. Python 3.8, 3.7, 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 2.7 are believed to be vulnerable.

The bug was discovered 09/26/2018. The weakness was published 09/25/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-14647 since 07/27/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117812 (Debian DSA-4306-1 : python2.7 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197302 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python2.7, Python3.4, Python3.5 Vulnerabilities (USN-3817-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
