A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Exiv2 0.26 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function CiffDirectory::readDirectory of the file crwimage_int.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. CiffDirectory::readDirectory() at crwimage_int.cpp in Exiv2 0.26 has excessive stack consumption due to a recursive function, leading to Denial of service.
The bug was discovered 09/26/2018. The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-17581 since 09/28/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
