CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.10/3.12/3.13 and classified as problematic. The impacted element is the function complete_emulated_mmio of the component Boundary Condition Handler. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2014-0049. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.10/3.12/3.13 (Operating System). Affected is the function complete_emulated_mmio of the component Boundary Condition Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the complete_emulated_mmio function in arch/x86/kvm/x86.c in the Linux kernel before 3.13.6 allows guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the host OS by leveraging a loop that triggers an invalid memory copy affecting certain cancel_work_item data.

The weakness was disclosed 02/27/2014 by Lars Bull with Google as kvm: x86: fix emulator buffer overflow as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0049 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73728 (Ubuntu 13.10 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2179-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195454 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux kernel (Raring HWE) Vulnerabilities (USN-2176-1)).

Applying the patch kvm: x86: fix emulator buffer overflow is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91492), Tenable (73728), SecurityFocus (BID 65909†), Secunia (SA57213†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43444†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
