A vulnerability in the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and the Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerability exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file via a link or an email attachment and persuading the user to open the file by using the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system.
The bug was discovered 09/19/2018. The weakness was presented 10/05/2018 by Steven Seeley (mr_me) with Zero Day Initiative as cisco-sa-20180919-webex as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-15421 since 08/17/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371221 (Cisco Webex Network Recording Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities(cisco-sa-20180919-webex)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
