A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in MediaWiki up to 1.19.12/up to 1.20.x/up to 1.21.x (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file UploadBase.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. includes/upload/UploadBase.php in MediaWiki before 1.19.12, 1.20.x and 1.21.x before 1.21.6, and 1.22.x before 1.22.3 does not prevent use of invalid namespaces in SVG files, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via an SVG upload, as demonstrated by use of a W3C XHTML namespace in conjunction with an IFRAME element.
The weakness was disclosed 03/02/2014 by Murray McAllister as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at lists.wikimedia.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2242 since 02/28/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:UploadBase.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72878 (MediaWiki < 1.19.12 / 1.21.6 / 1.22.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121915 (Fedora Security Update for mediawiki (FEDORA-2014-3338)).
Upgrading to version 1.19.13, 1.21.6 or 1.22.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
