A vulnerability was found in EPiServer Ektron CMS up to 9.0 SP3 Site CU30/9.1 SP3 Site CU 44/9.2 SP2 Site CU 21 (Content Management System). It has been rated as critical. Episerver Ektron CMS before 9.0 SP3 Site CU 31, 9.1 before SP3 Site CU 45, or 9.2 before SP2 Site CU 22 allows remote attackers to call aspx pages via the "activateuser.aspx" page, even if a page is located under the /WorkArea/ path, which is forbidden (normally available exclusively for local admins).

The bug was discovered 04/02/2019. The weakness was published 10/10/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-12596 since 06/20/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
