A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in D-Link DWR-116, DWR-512, DWR-712, DWR-912, DWR-921 and DWR-111. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file chkisg.htm. The manipulation of the argument Sip as part of a Parameter leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. An issue was discovered on D-Link DWR-116 through 1.06, DWR-512 through 2.02, DWR-712 through 2.02, DWR-912 through 2.02, DWR-921 through 2.02, and DWR-111 through 1.01 devices. An authenticated attacker may execute arbitrary code by injecting the shell command into the chkisg.htm page Sip parameter. This allows for full control over the device internals.
The bug was discovered 10/12/2018. The weakness was shared 10/17/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10823 since 05/08/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:chkisg.htm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
