Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Cisco NX-OS (Router Operating System) (affected version unknown). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) input packet processor of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause the SNMP application of an affected device to restart unexpectedly. The vulnerability is due to improper validation of SNMP protocol data units (PDUs) in SNMP packets. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted SNMP packet to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the SNMP application to restart multiple times, leading to a system-level restart and a denial of service (DoS) condition.
The bug was discovered 10/17/2018. The weakness was shared 10/17/2018 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20181017-nxos-snmp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-0456 since 11/26/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
