Mozilla Firefox 1.0 SSL View memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SSL View. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

String handling functions in Mozilla 1.7.3, Firefox 1.0, and Thunderbird before 1.0.2, such as the nsTSubstring_CharT::Replace function, do not properly check the return values of other functions that resize the string, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code by forcing an out-of-memory state that causes a reallocation to fail and return a pointer to a fixed address, which leads to heap corruption.

The weakness was shared 03/01/2005 by Mook, Doug Turner, Kohei Yoshino and M. Deaudelin (taviso) with Mozilla as MFSA2005-14 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0255 since 02/09/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/03/2024).

We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17270 (RHEL 4 : mozilla (RHSA-2005:277)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (17270), SecurityFocus (BID 12659†), Secunia (SA14407†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7245†). bugzilla.mozilla.org is providing further details. The entries VDB-1258, VDB-1257, VDB-1261 and VDB-1253 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
