A vulnerability was found in Squid Proxy up to 3.3.11/3.4.3 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SSL-Bump Range Request Stat Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Squid 3.1 before 3.3.12 and 3.4 before 3.4.4, when SSL-Bump is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure) via a crafted range request, related to state management.
The weakness was shared 03/09/2014 by Mathias Fischer and Fabian Hugelshofer with Open Systems AG as SQUID-2014:1 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0128 since 12/03/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73311 (Fedora 20 : squid-3.3.12-1.fc20 (2014-3915)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350294 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for squid: ALAS-2014-433).
Upgrading to version 3.3.12 or 3.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at squid-cache.org.
