Linux Kernel up to 4.16 XFS File System fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_attr.c Attribute data processing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 4.16. The impacted element is an unknown function in the library fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_attr.c of the component XFS File System. The manipulation as part of Attribute results in data processing. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2018-18690. The attack requires a local approach. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.16 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block in the library fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_attr.c of the component XFS File System. The manipulation as part of a Attribute leads to a data processing vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-19. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel before 4.17, a local attacker able to set attributes on an xfs filesystem could make this filesystem non-operational until the next mount by triggering an unchecked error condition during an xfs attribute change, because xfs_attr_shortform_addname in fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_attr.c mishandles ATTR_REPLACE operations with conversion of an attr from short to long form.

The bug was discovered 04/17/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/26/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-18690 since 10/26/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 192 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118770 (Oracle Linux 7 : kernel (ELSA-2018-3083)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171708 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:3689-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (118770) and SecurityFocus (BID 105753†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
