The session-restore feature in Mozilla Firefox before 28.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.25 does not consider the Content Security Policy of a data: URL, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted document that is accessed after a browser restart.
The weakness was published 03/18/2014 by Nicolas Golubovic with OUSPG as MFSA2014-23 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1504 since 01/16/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
[T]he Content Security Policy (CSP) of data: documents was not saved as part of session restore. If an attacker convinced a victim to open a document from a data: URL injected onto a page, this can lead to a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attack. The target page may have a strict CSP that protects against this XSS attack, but if the attacker induces a browser crash with another bug, an XSS attack would occur during session restoration, bypassing the CSP on the site. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73111 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (610de647-af8d-11e3-a25b-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166883 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2014:0448-1)).
Upgrading to version 28 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
