A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PostgreSQL up to 10.5/11.0 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects the function pg_upgrade/pg_dump. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
postgresql before versions 11.1, 10.6 is vulnerable to a to SQL injection in pg_upgrade and pg_dump via CREATE TRIGGER ... REFERENCING. Using a purpose-crafted trigger definition, an attacker can cause arbitrary SQL statements to run, with superuser privileges.
The bug was discovered 11/13/2018. The weakness was released 11/13/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16850 since 09/11/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118844 (FreeBSD : PostgreSQL -- SQL injection in pg_upgrade and pg_dump (1c27a706-e3aa-11e8-b77a-6cc21735f730)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171915 (OpenSUSE Security Update for postgresql10 (openSUSE-SU-2018:3893-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6 or 11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
