The cert_TestHostName function in lib/certdb/certdb.c in the certificate-checking implementation in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.16 accepts a wildcard character that is embedded in an internationalized domain name s U-label, which might allow man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via a crafted certificate.

The weakness was shared 03/18/2014 by Christian Heimes with Mozilla as Bug 903885 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1492 since 01/16/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
