haxx.se cURL/libcURL up to 7.35.0 on Windows Schannel SSL Backend input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in haxx.se cURL and libcURL up to 7.35.0 on Windows. Affected is an unknown function of the component Schannel SSL Backend. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2522. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in haxx.se cURL and libcURL up to 7.35.0 on Windows (Network Utility Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Schannel SSL Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

curl and libcurl 7.27.0 through 7.35.0, when running on Windows and using the SChannel/Winssl TLS backend, does not verify that the server hostname matches a domain name in the subject's Common Name (CN) or subjectAltName field of the X.509 certificate when accessing a URL that uses a numerical IP address, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof servers via an arbitrary valid certificate.

The weakness was presented 03/17/2014 by Daniel Stenberg as flaw in curl's Windows SSL backend as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with haxx.se. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-2522 since 03/17/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73247 (Slackware 13.0 / 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / 14.1 / current : curl (SSA:2014-086-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86343 (HP System Management Homepage Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBMU03422)).

Upgrading to version 7.36.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at curl.haxx.se. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92040), Tenable (73247), SecurityFocus (BID 66296†), Secunia (SA57836†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56919†).
