Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IBM WebSphere Application Server 7.0/8.0/8.5/9.0 (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Enterprise Bundle Archives. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM WebSphere Application Server 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 using Enterprise bundle Archives (EBA) could allow a local attacker to traverse directories on the system. By persuading a victim to extract a specially-crafted ZIP archive containing "dot dot slash" sequences (../), an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to write to arbitrary files on the system. Note: This vulnerability is known as "Zip-Slip". IBM X-Force ID: 149427.
The bug was discovered 11/14/2018. The weakness was published 11/16/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1797 since 12/13/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/06/2023). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371325 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability(ibm10730699)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
