A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in LiquidVPN Client up to 1.37. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component XPC Service. The manipulation of the argument tun_path/tap_path with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Multiple local privilege escalation vulnerabilities have been identified in the LiquidVPN client through 1.37 for macOS. An attacker can communicate with an unprotected XPC service and directly execute arbitrary OS commands as root or load a potentially malicious kernel extension because com.smr.liquidvpn.OVPNHelper uses the system function to execute the "tun_path" or "tap_path" pathname within a shell command.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2018. The weakness was disclosed 11/20/2018 as EDB-ID 45782 as not defined exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-18858 since 10/30/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
