Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun MySQL (Database Software). This issue affects the function udf_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
MySQL 4.0.23 and earlier, and 4.1.x up to 4.1.10, allows remote authenticated users with INSERT and DELETE privileges to execute arbitrary code by using CREATE FUNCTION to access libc calls, as demonstrated by using strcat, on_exit, and exit.
The weakness was released 03/11/2005 by Stefano Di Paola with isec (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0709 since 03/11/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21926 (CentOS 3 : mysql-server (CESA-2005:348)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117956 (CentOS Security Update for MySQL (CESA-2005:348)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.24 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mysql.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3528.
