Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.15-rc7 (Operating System). This affects the function __netlink_ns_capable of the file net/netlink/af_netlink.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Linux kernel before 4.15-rc8 was found to be vulnerable to a NULL pointer dereference bug in the __netlink_ns_capable() function in the net/netlink/af_netlink.c file. A local attacker could exploit this when a net namespace with a netnsid is assigned to cause a kernel panic and a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2018. The weakness was published 11/26/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-14646 since 07/27/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119251 (Scientific Linux Security Update : kernel on SL7.x x86_64 (20181127)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237064 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2018:3651)).
Upgrading to version 4.15-rc8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
