RarLabs WinRar 4.20 Filename authentication spoofing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in RarLabs WinRar 4.20 (File Compression Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Filename Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is integrity.

The weakness was shared 03/23/2014 by Danor Cohen (An7i) as WinRar File extension spoofing (0Day) as not defined exploit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at an7isec.blogspot.co.il. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

So by the file format descriptor, we can see that the Bits at offset 30 are referred to the file name of the compressed file. When we try to compress the file as "ZIP Format" with WINRAR, the file structure looks the same, but! WINRAR adds several properties of its own. WINRAR add extra "file name" into the compressed file like extra "filename". Further analysis reveals that the second name is the "File Name" of the file, that WINRAR will give to the output uncompressed file, while the First name is the name that appears at the WINRAR GUI window.

A public exploit has been developed by Danor Cohen and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at an7isec.blogspot.co.il. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92103), Exploit-DB (32752), SecurityFocus (BID 66383†), OSVDB (62610†) and Secunia (SA57754†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
