A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). This issue affects an unknown code of the component vhdx Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/26/2014 by Jeff Cody with Red Hat as [Qemu-devel] [PATCH for-2.0 00/47] block: image format input validation as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.gnu.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0148 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73656 (CentOS 6 : qemu-kvm (CESA-2014:0420)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156823 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu-kvm (ELSA-2014-0420)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.gnu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
