A vulnerability was found in Perl up to 5.28.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function S_regatom of the file regcomp.c of the component Regex Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Perl before 5.26.3 and 5.28.0 before 5.28.1 has a buffer overflow via a crafted regular expression that triggers invalid write operations.
The bug was discovered 11/29/2018. The weakness was disclosed 11/29/2018 as perldelta - what is new for perl v5.26.3 as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is available at metacpan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-18312 since 10/14/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.28.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
