An issue has been found in PowerDNS Recursor before version 4.1.8 where a remote attacker sending a DNS query can trigger an out-of-bounds memory read while computing the hash of the query for a packet cache lookup, possibly leading to a crash.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2018. The weakness was shared 12/03/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-16855 since 09/11/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
