Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.28 (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function getaddrinfo. The manipulation as part of a Hostname leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) through 2.28, attempting to resolve a crafted hostname via getaddrinfo() leads to the allocation of a socket descriptor that is not closed. This is related to the if_nametoindex() function.
The bug was discovered 11/27/2018. The weakness was published 12/04/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-19591 since 11/26/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 120918 (Fedora 29 : glibc (2018-f6b7df660d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351477 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for glibc: ALAS2-2019-1140).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (120918) and SecurityFocus (BID 106037†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
