CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.2. It has been classified as problematic. The impacted element is the function crypto_report_one of the file crypto/crypto_user.c of the component Crypto User Configuration API. The manipulation leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2018-19854. The attack can only be performed from a local environment. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function crypto_report_one of the file crypto/crypto_user.c of the component Crypto User Configuration API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 4.19.3. crypto_report_one() and related functions in crypto/crypto_user.c (the crypto user configuration API) do not fully initialize structures that are copied to userspace, potentially leaking sensitive memory to user programs. NOTE: this is a CVE-2013-2547 regression but with easier exploitability because the attacker does not need a capability (however, the system must have the CONFIG_CRYPTO_USER kconfig option).

The bug was discovered 11/09/2018. The weakness was published 12/04/2018 by Jann Horn with Google (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-19854 since 12/04/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121289 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2019-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171998 (OpenSUSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2019:0065-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.19.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (121289) and SecurityFocus (BID 106537†). Similar entries are available at VDB-63774, VDB-119385, VDB-127414 and VDB-127693. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
