Details
A vulnerability was found in ARM mbed TLS up to 2.1.16/2.7.7/2.14.0. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component RSA Decryption. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Arm Mbed TLS before 2.14.1, before 2.7.8, and before 2.1.17 allows a local unprivileged attacker to recover the plaintext of RSA decryption, which is used in RSA-without-(EC)DH(E) cipher suites.
The bug was discovered 11/30/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/05/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at tls.mbed.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-19608 since 11/27/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119698 (FreeBSD : Mbed TLS -- Local timing attack on RSA decryption (293f40a0-ffa1-11e8-b258-0011d823eebd)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277620 (Fedora Security Update for mbedtls (FEDORA-2018-571ea64f3d)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.17, 2.7.8 or 2.14.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (119698). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
