A vulnerability was found in LibRaw up to 0.18.5 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function LibRaw::panasonic_load_raw of the file dcraw_common.cpp. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. An error related to the "LibRaw::panasonic_load_raw()" function (dcraw_common.cpp) in LibRaw versions prior to 0.18.6 can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow and subsequently cause a crash via a specially crafted TIFF image.
The bug was discovered 12/08/2017. The weakness was published 12/07/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secuniaresearch.flexerasoftware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-16909 since 11/21/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Upgrading to version 0.18.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
