Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in WebKit (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.1.3 and 7.x before 7.0.3, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2014-04-01-1.
The weakness was disclosed 04/01/2014 by Renata Hodovan with Google Chrome Security Team as HT6181 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1312 since 01/08/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73304 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.1.3 / 7.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121875 (Apple Safari 6.1.3 / 7.0.3 Not Installed (HT6181)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92202), Tenable (73304), SecurityFocus (BID 66578†), Secunia (SA58140†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1029983†).
