A vulnerability was found in WordPress up to 5.0.0 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. In WordPress versions before 5.0.1, the user-activation page could be read by a search engine's web crawler if an unusual configuration were chosen. The search engine could then index and display a user's e-mail address and (rarely) the password that was generated by default.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2018. The weakness was released 12/14/2018 by Sam Thomas (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-20151 since 12/14/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119615 (WordPress < 4.9.9 / 5.x < 5.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176626 (Debian Security Update for wordpress (DSA 4401-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.28, 3.8.28, 3.9.26, 4.0.25, 4.1.25, 4.2.22, 4.3.18, 4.4.17, 4.5.16, 4.6.13, 4.7.12, 4.8.8, 4.9.9 or 5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
