A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Kibana up to 5.6.12/6.4.2. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Console Plugin. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. Kibana versions before 6.4.3 and 5.6.13 contain an arbitrary file inclusion flaw in the Console plugin. An attacker with access to the Kibana Console API could send a request that will attempt to execute javascript code. This could possibly lead to an attacker executing arbitrary commands with permissions of the Kibana process on the host system.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2018. The weakness was published 12/20/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at elastic.co. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-17246 since 09/20/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13433 (Elastic Kibana Unauthorized Disclosure of Information (ESA-2018-17)).
Upgrading to version 5.6.13 or 6.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
