Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in nginx 1.5.10 on 32-bit (Web Server). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component SPDY Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The SPDY implementation in the ngx_http_spdy_module module in nginx 1.5.10 before 1.5.11, when running on a 32-bit platform, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted request.

The issue has been introduced in 02/04/2014. The weakness was shared 03/04/2014 by Lucas Molas as [nginx-announce] nginx security advisory (CVE-2014-0088) as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared for download at mailman.nginx.org. The posting contains:

The problem only affects nginx 1.5.10 on 32-bit platforms, compiled with the ngx_http_spdy_module module (which is not compiled by default), if the "spdy" option of the "listen" directive is used in a configuration file.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0088 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72849 (FreeBSD : nginx -- SPDY memory corruption (89db3b31-a4c3-11e3-978f-f0def16c5c1b)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13265 (Nginx Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.5.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at nginx.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92303), Tenable (72849), SecurityTracker (ID 1030150†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43942†). bugzilla.redhat.com is providing further details.
