It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in SQLite up to 3.25.2. This affects some unknown processing of the component FTS3 Extension. The manipulation as part of a Query leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SQLite before 3.25.3, when the FTS3 extension is enabled, encounters an integer overflow (and resultant buffer overflow) for FTS3 queries that occur after crafted changes to FTS3 shadow tables, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging the ability to run arbitrary SQL statements (such as in certain WebSQL use cases), aka Magellan.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2018. The weakness was published 12/21/2018 with Tencent (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-20346 since 12/21/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 48 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119848 (Debian DLA-1613-1 : sqlite3 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371588 (Apple iCloud for Windows Prior to 7.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities(HT209451)).
Upgrading to version 3.25.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (119848) and SecurityFocus (BID 106323†). Similar entries are available at VDB-130034, VDB-130004, VDB-130005 and VDB-130006. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
