Details
A vulnerability was found in MobileIron Virtual Smartphone Platform up to 5.9.0 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component AES-ECB-PKCS1.5 Key. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2013. The weakness was released 04/02/2014 by Nico Leidecker with Matta Consulting as MATTA-2013-004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at trustmatta.com. The public release was coordinated with MobileIron. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7286 since 01/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue. The advisory points out:
The password obfuscation algorithm is known and has already been documented [1]... AES-ECB-PKCS1.5 with a known, shared key. While we won't release a full-featured exploit for the vulnerability, we will release a PoC to confirm whether the hashes are indeed vulnerable. The vendor has confirmed that a stronger encryption method is used since release 5.7.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 5.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92352) and SecurityFocus (BID 66595†). Additional details are provided at packetstormsecurity.com.
